Barack Obama now appears likely to be the man standing at the Capitol and raising his right hand on 20 January 2009. If he does so, he has made it clear that he intends to assume the pragmatic progressive mantle handed down from FDR, Kennedy, Johnson and Clinton. He will take up the unfinished challenge laid down by a former president on that cold January day the year he was born to "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

If he has any sense at all, and over the last two years we have learned that indeed he is a possessor of a seemingly limitless arsenal of intelligence, tact and devotion, he will inspire America to reach for that greater image of itself, beyond partisanship, beyond rancor, beyond corruption and greed. Of the two major party candidates, only Barack Obama is capable of healing the wounds this nation has suffered, self-inflicted and otherwise. He will forge a path to a brighter future for all of America, not just the privileged few. Barack Obama sees beyond cultural, racial, and economic divides and is the only one who can lead us to the fulfillment of Dr. King's dream that has gone so long unrealized.

When you step inside that voting booth on November 4th, consider the promise, vision, and yes, hope, so clearly evident in the possibility of Barack Obama as our nation's leader.
