At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Get Positive in 2009! Print E-mail

Every twelve months, we come together with our friends and family to celebrate the New Year. And boy, do we know how to have a good time! But what is it that we're celebrating exactly? Something tells me there is more to it than growing a year older and getting to file our taxes once again. There must be a deeper meaning.

Something tells me that this holiday of ours revolves around change and progress. The tradition of making resolutions for the New Year is an excellent example of what the holiday stands for: an opportunity to make positive change in our lives, giving us hope for the future. Sadly, in just the first week of the New Year, as most of us return to our “daily grind”, hollow routines take hold and our hope for the future is accosted by the duties and errands of the present.

I suggest that this year, we do our best to hold on to those ideals by making a resolution to continue being hopeful and positive throughout the year. If we can but keep this simple resolution, the other changes we might like to make in our lives will come much more easily. Resolutions to stop smoking or lose weight, for example, are often given up before March! With a positive attitude, you're much more likely to succeed with your other resolutions.

Meditation Is Your Spiritual Foundation

When building a spiritual practice, it is most important to have a strong foundation in place. This will support you during times when you are experiencing challenges, and rapid growth or change. Many spiritual traditions use the metaphor of the tree to describe our human energetic physiology.

When we observe a tree in nature, we are only looking at the half of it that is above ground. The tree spans two realms – its root system penetrates the earth as wide and as deep as it reaches upwards and outwards into the air. The root system of the tree enables the tree to weather massive storms, sustain upward growth and expansion, and feed itself from the nourishment found in the soil.

The Secret, or the Ego? Print E-mail

The law of attraction has been around for a very long time; however, it has recently found a much wider audience through the film and companion book, “The Secret.” But, does "The Secret"  illustrate the law of attraction beyond the ego?

A couple of years ago, a friend sent me an email titled “The Secret”.  The email had a link in it with a short note informing me that “The Secret” was a new feature-length documentary film that I could watch online for free by clicking on the link.

I clicked on the link and was immediately impressed with the professionalism and quality of the film’s opening, flashy graphics, and stylish presentation. I was struck by its seductive lure-its promise to be the first film to divulge to a mass audience the long-held “secret” that unlocks the manifestation of our dreams.  Independent documentary films had certainly come a long way in glamor, style, hook, and message.
