Long before modern medicine, holistic remedies were the only treatments available for all kinds of ailments. Ancient shamans and medicine men (or medicine women) studied the effects of their local plants and administered them to others in their tribe, they also used various other methods like acupuncture and healing practices that have been lost today. Many modern hospitals and medical centers are now integrating some ancient holistic remedies and healing practices into their professional treatments, such as reiki, yoga, and the use of herbs. Holistic remedies that were once our only medicine are now called “alternative medicine”.

The main philosophy behind natural health and holistic remedies is to allow the human body to heal and repair itself, to support the process naturally by being aware and also by using natural means and methods to give your body the tools it needs. In extreme conditions, of course, some prescription drugs may be necessary and holistic remedies are not a substitute for professional medical care. If you’re taking medications or seeing a medical professional about your condition, you should discuss holistic remedies with them before beginning to treat yourself with them. Even in otherwise good health, you should seek a diagnosis from a physician before using holistic remedies to treat any condition. Holistic remedies can help you avoid prescription medications or help you reduce the number of medications you must take, but it’s important to find holistic remedies that will be effective and safe for you.

Many holistic remedies can include nutritional supplements. Omega-3 supplements can be taken for depression. These fatty acids help improve brain function. Natural supplements may also be used to help replace vitamins lost because of conditions like diabetes. Diabetics often suffer from vitamin deficiencies, such as vitamin C and vitamin E, so supplements for these vitamins as well as zinc and chromium are often taken as part of holistic remedies for diabetes.

Herbs play an important role in many holistic remedies. Motherwort, for instance, has been used by women for centuries to treat many common ailments. This suitably named plant is known to treat cramping and several other menstruation-related ailments. It can also relieve anxiety and calm your nerves. Midwives have even used Motherwort to prevent infection of the uterus. In China it was used to prevent pregnancy.

St. John’s Wort, one of the most popular herbs for holistic remedies, can be found in almost every supermarket and health food store. It has been used to treat depression, insomnia, and even ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). However, some people have experienced adverse effects and St. John’s Wort has been known to interact with many pharmaceutical drugs. It is not recommended for anyone who may have bipolar disorder, because it may cause a manic episode. It’s important to get a diagnosis from a medical professional before you start treating your depression with holistic remedies.

You will also find many mind-body wellness techniques associated with various holistic remedies, such as mindfulness meditation, holistic healing, and yoga or pilates. To help any medical or natural treatment for any condition have its optimal effect, having a healthy and balanced mind and body is very important. Stress in general has been shown to have a negative impact on your health, so reducing stress and promoting a sense of overall well-being plays an essential role in holistic remedies.
